O taiwan Defense Minister Wellington Koo today expressed confidence in the continued support of the U.S. Congress for the sale of arms to the island after the significant victory of the Democratic Party in the mid-term elections on Tuesday.

“The United States Congress has systematically supported Taiwan’s efforts to strengthen its defence capabilities in a bipartisan manner,” Koo said during a parliamentary session, according to statements quoted by the CNA news agency.

He added that the Taiwan Defense Ministry will continue to collaborate with the members of the U.S. Congress and maintain close contacts with the U.S. War Department to ensure that arms sales to the island “take place as planned.”.

The statements arise two days after the Democrats inflicted a heavy defeat on the Republicans by gaining control of the House of Representatives and Senate, which should limit the margin of manoeuvre of the American President, Donald Trump, until the end of his term in 2028.

In the case of Taiwan, analysts consider that the victory of the opposition could increase the pressure on the Trump administration to unlock an arms package for Taipei, valued at around $14,000 million (EUR 12,400 million).

The United States is Taiwan's leading arms supplier and, while not maintaining official diplomatic relations with the island, they may intervene in its defence in the event of a conflict with Beijing.

China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and does not exclude the use of force to ensure reunification.
