Deurostat, published today by the European Union statistical office (EU), shows that inflation in the euro area was 2.0% in August 2025 and has now risen to 3.3% a year later.

In the chain change, compared to July this year, the inflation rate increased by 0.4 percentage points, from 2.9% to 3.3%.

According to Eurostat, the main price pressure came from energy, whose inflation rate should have accelerated to 14.3% in August, as against 10.3% in July.

In August 2025, energy prices had a negative annual change of 2.0%.

Now, services followed, with an estimated rate of 3.0%, below 3.3% of July, and non-energy industrial goods, with 1.2%, above 0.9% of the previous month.

In food, alcohol and tobacco, inflation is expected to remain at 1.2%, the same figure recorded in July and well below 3.2% observed in August last year.

In Portugal, the annual inflation rate should have accelerated to 3.6% in August, after having remained at 3.1% between May and July, according to the estimate indicated by Eurostat.

The Portuguese rate was thus 0.3 percentage points above the euro area average and increased by 1.1 percentage points compared to August 2025, when annual inflation was 2.5%.

In the annual comparison, the rise in Portuguese inflation between August 2025 and August 2026 was, however, slightly lower than in the euro area: 1.1 percentage points in Portugal, compared to 1.3 points in the euro area.

The data released by Eurostat today are still a rapid estimate.
