“Jarrived,” Donald Trump said today, after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliation measures against US customs duties following the failure of trade negotiations between the two countries.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a state” from the U.S. “without being,” said the American President in a message on his Truth Social social network.

“ Moreover, they have imposed huge amounts of customs duties on our fantastic farmers for many years. Enough”, he added.

Mark Carney stated on Saturday that new Canadian tariffs would come into force on September 8th, aimed in particular at the US steel and dairy industries, after the entry into force on Saturday of new 50% US surcharges that affect about 20 billion dollars in goods, 5.5% of Canadian exports to the United States.

On Saturday, Mark Carney said that his country managed to escape “a bad deal”, denouncing “unfair and uneconomic” last-minute changes proposed by Washington in areas such as steel or automobiles, which “ called into question the reliability of any agreement”.

The failure of the negotiations between Washington and Ottawa implies the automatic imposition of a 50% US customs tariff on Canadian products (approx. 24 billion euros), to which Carney has already said that it will respond “dollar per dollar” in the “steel, dairy, agricultural equipment or paper” sectors.

Early this morning, the US representative in the negotiations, Jamieson Greer, accused Canada of suddenly changing the terms of an agreement that would have made Otava a privileged partner.

“ Despite the offer made to Canada to receive the best treatment among all exporters important to our market, new demands and setbacks in other commitments from Canada have disturbed the delicate balance achieved in recent days,” said Greer.

The U.S. Trade Representative accused Canada of extending a campaign of economic retaliation against Washington with “total prohibitions on certain American goods and services,” although, just this week, Washington improved its proposal with “significant tariff reductions in steel, aluminium, cars and wood.”.

“ This is a missed opportunity for Canada to establish a partnership with the United States, which is the economy with the fastest G7 growth,” he concluded.

Sources close to the negotiations indicated to Bloomberg that the talks failed on Friday due to a last-minute disagreement on the reduction of US customs duties on medium- and heavy-duty Canadian vehicles.

The Canadians insisted on an additional reduction in customs duties and were faced with a categorical refusal by the United States, according to Bloomberg.

Canada retaliates against USA with tariffs on steel, electronics and dairy products

Canada will retaliate against the new US tariffs, imposing customs duties on steel, electronic equipment and dairy products purchased from the United States of America as of September 8, said Prime Minister Mark Carney today.
