O President of the United States, Donald Trump, today considered “very unlikely” a resumption of the war with Iran, provided there is progress in negotiations with Tehran.
“ It depends on whether or not they sign a very solid agreement,” the President said in a telephone interview with a CNN journalist.
And referring to a resumption of war added: “It is very unlikely that this will be necessary.”.
He said, however, that he could order the resumption of hostilities if the situation changed, adding: “But we attacked them very hard. I attacked them very hard. They have no idea how I attacked them”.
The statements contrast with those of Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who stated today, just before, that diplomatic negotiations between the two countries had stalled due to the “shock” caused by the defeat of Donald Trump’s campaign in the mid-term elections last Tuesday.
“ In recent days, there have been no more trips (of the mediators), and the reason is the shock that the results of the elections in the United States caused everyone,” said Abbas Araghchi on state television. It will take some time for the environment “to be favorable to resume the displacements of mediators. We must be patient”, he added.
Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict, triggered in late February by the joint attacks of the United States and Israel against Iran, intensified before the U.S. mid-term elections.
After the defeat of his party in the elections, the Republican President acknowledged that the conflict, by causing the dizzying rise in oil prices, contributed largely to the outcome.
