A European Union (EU) will finance at EUR 7.5 million the modernisation of Ukraine's border management systems in a Frontex-led partnership has been announced today.
According to a statement released today, the amount comes from the Ukraine Support Mechanism, the partnership being led by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the EU Asylum Agency and the International Migration Organisation.
The partnership wants to support Ukraine in aligning its border management and asylum systems with EU and Schengen rules.
Working in collaboration with the relevant Ukrainian authorities – in particular the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service and the Ukraine State Migration Service – the partnership will support Kiev’s efforts to strengthen its border management and asylum systems.
The partnership will last 36 months, the statement also states.
Frontex will help Ukrainian authorities improve the way border guards, customs, police and other services plan and work together.
This includes support for Ukraine’s integrated border management strategy and border management aspects in its preparations for the Schengen area, as well as work on risk analysis and planning for sudden border changes.
