A European Union (EU) today added three people and four entities to the list of sanctions for support for North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, which now includes 80 individuals and 25 companies.

Targets – including two Russian entrepreneurs – “are responsible for supporting, promoting or facilitating activities contributing to the DPRK’s nuclear-related, ballistic-missile-related or other weapons of mass destruction-related programmes, as well as for violating and circumventing UN sanctions” according to an EU Council statement.

The new inclusions in the list aim, the Council highlighted, activities linked to the growing military and economic cooperation between North Korea and Russia, including the mobilisation of North Korean workers in Russia, trade and industrial cooperation and trade in ‘oil weapons’, “all in violation of the prohibitions imposed by the United Nations Security Council that Russia itself approved as a permanent member of the Security Council.”.

The targets are prohibited from entering the European Union and sanctions also include the freezing of assets in the bloc.
