Meven if the connector is the same format, not all HDMI cables are the same and may already have wondered about the reason why some models are significantly more expensive than others.
You may even think that it is just a matter of choice of materials and that the end result is the same without any additional gain. Well, note the engadget site that the situation is not quite so and that some situations may even justify the purchase of a more expensive HDMI cable to take the best advantage possible.
It turns out that some HDMI cables have higher prices because they are able to transfer more information. For example, the information that is taken to a 4K television from a streaming box is not the same as a PlayStation 5 with a 4K and 120Hz running game.
Different purposes require cables with different specifications and you will see that you may often have problems transmitting image with an HDMI cable which, after exchanging for another more appropriate, will have the situation resolved.
The HDMI cables are distributed across different categories according to the information transfer speed they allow. Among the existing ones are Premium High Speed HDMI (which allows transfers up to 18Gbps), Ultra High Speed HDMI (up to 48Gbps) and the latest one, Ultra96 HDMI (up to 96Gbps) also known as HDMI 2.2.
As you can see, choosing a right HDMI cable is not just getting to a store and buying the most expensive since, depending on the situation, one of the cheapest does not present any problem. On the other hand, if the two connecting points are farther than normal, it may make sense to choose long and more expensive cables that are effective in transferring the information.
Answering the question: yes, buying a more expensive HDMI cable can make sense depending on how it will be used. As mentioned above, if you are looking for an HDMI cable to play in 4K and 120Hz on a TV or monitor compatible with this quality level, then investment will be worthwhile.
