“ ANDlet us put an end to this war and let President Trump help us put an end to this war. I think we need to do this, if possible, before winter,” Volodymyr Zelensky said before the media withdrew from the meeting he held with Donald Trump at the UN headquarters in New York, where the general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly takes place.
Trump, who had previously stated, from the gallery of the Assembly, that the war will end sooner than many think, agreed with Zelensky's words.
The reporters' questions were addressed exclusively to Trump, who was evasive in all his answers, according to the news agency France-Presse.
Questioned whether Washington will allow Kiev to manufacture interceptor missiles for the systems Patriot, Trump replied that it was possible and anticipated that the matter would be addressed by both with the respective teams present as soon as the journalists left the room.
The Republican leader had promised in July, during the NATO summit in Ankara, that he would grant him the necessary authorizations to manufacture these air defense missiles, but then retreated in some of his statements.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with Fox News earlier this month that Washington and Kiev were continuing to negotiate licenses for the production of arms on Ukrainian soil, but warned that even if it did, the process would take years.
The journalists present also questioned the Republican leader whether he considered it possible for a three-way meeting to include Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, whom Zelensky proposed for the G20 summit to be held in Miami in December.
Trump merely said that Putin was willing to meet him, as he did in Alaska in August 2025.
He later reaffirmed that both Zelensky and Putin want to end the war.
On the law recently passed by Congress that empowers him to impose customs duties on countries that finance the Kremlin’s war effort through the purchase of Russian oil, he limited himself to saying that it is “very severe” and gives him great powers.
Asked further whether he would address the matter at the meeting he has scheduled with the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, did not give a clear answer and began to commend his relationship with the counterpart.
China is the leading buyer of Russian oil.
During his speech during the UN general debate, Trump ensured that Washington was “working closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine” and that it would “resolve this situation.”.
“I believe that this will happen sooner than is thought,” said the American leader, who has made several similar statements without real progress towards a resolution of the conflict.
