Dois Belarusians suspected of organizing an act of sabotage near Nuremberg were placed in provisional detention, informed today the prosecutor of Munich, confirming to AFP an article from Spiegel.
At the age of 39 and 50, suspects are accused of wanting, “on account of a foreign government or a foreign organization”, setting fire to a building or critical infrastructure, wrote a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in e-mail sent to AFP.
According to Spiegel, men suspected of acting on behalf of the Russian Federation would want to cause a fire near a railroad and an electricity transport line.
The two have been in provisional detention since October 7 and Romania has already requested extradition, he added.
According to Spiegel, the Belarusians participated in the start of the fire on September 14, near an arms factory in the Romanian city of Brasov.
On Monday, Romanian leaders accused the Russians of coordinating a sabotage network, involving it in the fire.
They also announced that two members of this network had been detained in Germany and that a third party had fled to Poland.
And the Polish authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest in Warsaw of a Ukrainian in compliance with a European warrant issued by Romania.
This Ukrainian is “suspected of having participated in the preparation of acts of sabotage aimed at setting fire to an arms and ammunition factory of strategic importance (...) on 14 September”.
Germany and Romania, like other Member States of the European Union and NATO, say that they are the target of what they call a ‘hybrid’ sabotage and interference campaign promoted by the Russians to reduce their support for Ukraine, invaded by the Russian Federation in February 2022.
