O mozambican party Anamola said today that Venâncio Mondlane is being tried for crimes he did not commit, also considering the release of his bank accounts strange when he remains accused in the post-election proceedings.
The position was taken in Maputo by the interim Secretary-General of the National Alliance for Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), James Njiji, a day after the Supreme Court (TS) decision to order the bank institutions to release the accounts of Venâncio Mondlane, considering that the assumptions for maintaining the measure did not exist.
“What’s weird, really, is how you accuse a Mozambican individual of inciting terrorism and then you have to release the accounts where he moves money. Is it not feared that he can continue to finance terrorism?", asked James Njiji.
Speaking in the margins of the 1st Annual Conference on Electoral Democracy, promoted by the Electoral Platform Decide, the leader expressed solidarity with the leader and founder of the party, whose accounts have been blocked since November 2024.
“ We are happy to see our president with his accounts released and, as you can imagine, having the accounts blocked for two years was not an easy thing,” he said.
In November 2024, a month after the general elections, the Maputo City Judicial Court determined the blocking of all Mondlane bank accounts, also requesting information about the respective movements and bank statements of that year, with particular attention to values received from abroad or transferred out of the country.
At that time judicial investigations were already taking place against the politician, who called for the post-election protests and never acknowledged the official results of the general election on October 9, 2024, in which he was a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.
The decision to unblock appears just over a month from the start of the trial of Venâncio Mondlane, scheduled for November 17 at the TS.
The criminal process was moved by the Public Prosecutor (MP) in the context of post-election demonstrations, with the politician accused of crimes of public apology to crime, incitement to collective disobedience, public instigation to the practice of crime, instigation to terrorism and incitement to terrorism, in a criminal framework that can exceed 20 years of effective imprisonment.
According to the prosecution order of the MP, to which Lusa had access, the evidence against Venâncio Mondlane is largely based on appeals to contest, strikes, paralysis and mobilization for protests made through live broadcasts on social networks.
Today, Anamola’s Secretary-General said to view the trial of the party’s founder with normality and “hope for justice”, although he considers that he is responding for facts he has not practiced.
“ We understand that the president is being tried for crimes he did not commit, because he did not go to people's homes to ask for or take people to go on the street ", Njiji said, recognizing that the criminal responsibility is individual.
According to the leader, the party continues to function normally, regardless of the judgment of its leader, also hoping that sympathizers will follow the process in any way they deem appropriate.
“ We hope that justice works and that is what we aim for ", concluded.
In September, the TS rejected the request for live transmission of the trial by the media, claiming the need to safeguard “the smoothness” of the process.
Mondlane never recognized the results of the general election of October 2024, which attributed the victory to Daniel Chapo, candidate of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo). The contest triggered a wave of post-election protests for about five months, causing hundreds of deaths, as well as episodes of destruction and looting.
