“Fhi kidnapped and murdered the mobilization of the Anamola district of Morrumbene, Ilídio Facitela Gustavo, curiously one of my witnesses for the trial marked in the Supreme Court ", said at the beginning of the night, in his account on social network Facebook, the party president, without further details.

In May, Venâncio Mondlane presented a new complaint of political persecution to the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), pointing to 56 dead and 436 cases of “extreme violence” against his party, the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (Anamola), founded just over a year ago.

“ We submit to the RMP an updated report and complaint, [with] 436 cases of extreme violence against this party,” said Venâncio Mondlane, the main challenger of governance in Mozambique.

Presidential candidate in October 2024 and who never recognized the victory of Daniel Chapo (Frelimo), sworn in in January 2025 as Mozambique's fifth President, Mondlane led the contest to the electoral process, which led to five months of street protests, violence, looting of public institutions and companies, as well as more than 400 dead, especially in clashes with the police.

Violence did not end until March, after a meeting between Venâncio Mondlane and Daniel Chapo.

The Mozambican Supreme Court (TS) announced on Friday the possibility of postponement of the beginning of the trial of Venâncio Mondlane, initially scheduled for October 6, after a request from the defense of the politician, who claimed “incompatibility of agendas”.

This is a criminal case brought by the Public Prosecutor (MP) against Mondlane in the context of post-election demonstrations. The politician answers for the crimes of public apology to crime, incitement to collective disobedience, public instigation to the practice of crime, instigation to terrorism and incitement to terrorism, in a criminal framework that can exceed 20 years of effective imprisonment.

According to the prosecution order issued earlier by Lusa, evidence against Venâncio Mondlane is largely based on appeals to contest, strikes, paralyses and mobilization for protests through live broadcasts on social networks.

According to the TS, the defense of Venâncio Mondlane requested the postponement, claiming “incompatibility of agendas” with the date previously set. The request has already been appreciated by the MP and it is now up to the TS to decide, after finding a “consensual” date between the parties.

According to the Constitution, in September 2025, as the second most voted candidate, Venâncio Mondlane took office as a member of the Council of State, advisory body of the President of the Republic, whose members enjoy immunities.

The Mozambican Council of State suspended Mondlane's immunity to allow the prosecution to continue.
