Trump confirmed the talks in statements to journalists on the margins of the annual meeting of world leaders in New York without giving details of the discussions and their protagonists.
The meeting lasted three hours, according to the American leader, who spoke during a press conference with the Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, indicating only that “in the very near future” a “new meeting” with the Iranian delegation is planned.
“ I am very pleased”, said American envoy Steve Witkoff, speaking alongside Donald Trump, about the discussions with Iranian representatives.
Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of the US President, who also participated in negotiations with Tehran before they were interrupted in June, was also in the room, according to the agency France-Presse (AFP).
A few hours earlier, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, Donald Trump said he had to choose between “annihilating” Iran or reaching an agreement, predicting that a diplomatic solution would be found after the mid-term elections for the US Congress, scheduled for the beginning of November.
Washington and Tehran agreed on 17 June a memorandum of understanding, with mediation from Middle East countries, which included an immediate ceasefire, the reopening of the Ormuz Strait to maritime traffic and the lifting of the naval blockade imposed by the United States to Iran's ports.
However, the parties returned to their naval blockades and did not continue the negotiations provided for in the Memorandum to reach a definitive peace agreement, the two-month deadline of which expired.
In addition to the resumption of hostilities, the United States announced an “economic war” aimed at suffocating Iran through sanctions against individuals and entities establishing trade relations with the Islamic Republic.
Iran demands that the United States return to the commitments made in the memorandum and has reiterated that the military threat in the Strait of Ormuz will only be lifted in exchange for the end of the war on all fronts and the end of the US blockade.
