Asaudi forces today intercepted a ballistic missile targeting Riyadh shortly after authorities issued an alert and AFP news agency journalists reported explosions.

Saudi Arabia “interceded and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Huthi terrorist militia towards Riyadh,” said Turki al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi Arabian coalition supporting the Yemeni Government, in a message published on social network X.

The country has been widely targeted by attacks by the pro-Iran Shiite rebels, which have affected airports, oil stations and other infrastructure in Saudi territory, especially after the start of the US and Israel war against the Iranians in February.

Saudi Arabia, like other countries in the Persian Gulf, has American interests in its territory. The country also leads the military coalition that supports the Yemeni government army recognized by the international community against Huthis rebels.

The current clashes between the Huthis and the Yemeni government forces put an end to the ceasefire agreement of 2022 which had largely stopped fighting in Yemeni civil war.
