A firearm used by a 16-year-old teenager to kill three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Primary School in Bend, Oregon last week, was offered to her by her mother as a birthday present.

The 12-gauge Maverick 88 shotgun, which acts by pumping action, was acquired legally in August 2026 by Shauntai Nickerson, mother of Griffin J. John II, and offered to the young man for recreational use, according to sources consulted by CBS News.

It is recalled that Griffin J. John II initially fired at a passing van, whose driver contacted 112, before entering the school by firing at the windows of a set of double doors. Then she entered the first classroom on the left, where she killed three children of 5, 8 and 11 years old, and a 25-year-old teacher, identified as Megan Lambert. The five-year-old victim was identified by the police and their family as Rhoam Summer. The families of the remaining children have not yet made their names public, according to Bend police.

A 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher were also injured. In total, there were nine people – four adults and five children – in the classroom during the attack.

The shooter was shot down by a passerby who witnessed the first attack on the van and followed the teenager to the inside of the school. Kaylub Giamanco, 36, is a resident of Bend and has two daughters who attend Silver Rail Primary School.

The suspect was a former student of that school establishment, but no motive for the attack has yet been revealed.

In 2020, the young man's mother confessed to KTVZ that her 10-year-old son had special needs and was having difficulties with distance learning during the pandemic.

“ It will be great for my son to go back there and get the help he needs with qualified teachers ", said.

Bend's police department said on Monday that they were hoping to finish collecting evidence at school by the end of that day.

Researchers are analyzing the computer, phone, social networks, research history and other online activities of the attacker, police sources said in the same way.

“The worst day.” Dead child family in Oregon claims to be “broken”

Rhoam Summer’s family, one of the children with special needs killed in the school shooting in Oregon, claimed to be “distorted and lost.” The attack caused five deaths, including three minors and a teacher, before the 16-year-old shooter was shot by a civilian.
