Mpay attention to the food you keep in the fridge door! Although it seems a harmless habit, every time you open the refrigerator door you may be neglecting your health.
Nutritionist Rachel Gargano reveals to the Real It is simple that there are foods that should not even stay in this compartment, since the temperature shock, even momentarily, can cause them to spoil and then “lead to concerns about food safety”.
“By opening the refrigerator door, all food and beverages stored are exposed to the hottest air in the kitchen,” the nutritionist describes. “This means that these foods will remain warmer than necessary to keep these foods safe.”.
In addition, this “variable temperature represents a higher risk of bacterial growth”
Meat
Any animal product should be more protected from direct heat shock and this type of food should always be stored on a lower shelf in the refrigerator, as if liquids from the meat flow, this may prevent “cross contamination in other products”, explains Gargano.
Milk
“The milk should be stored on an internal shelf at the bottom of the refrigerator, since that is the only way to keep the milk stable and fresh for longer”, and the same applies to yogurts.
Eggs
Although it is very common to see eggs on this door and even outdoors. These experts point out that the ideal is to stabilize their temperature, that is, “they should be stored in the box on a fixed shelf,” Gargano describes.
“ By keeping them in the box this can help to preserve the correct moisture levels, and by keeping them inside the refrigerator this “can prevent temperature variations that can spoil them before necessary.”
Fruit and vegetables
It is no accident that there is a drawer for these foods. “Although fruits and vegetables are slightly less susceptible to temperature changes, they can last much longer when they are kept at the right moisture levels,” Gargano points out.
Wine
Although it is common to put drinks in this compartment, these experts say that wine is an exception, especially if they are already open bottles. They point out that wine must remain at “a constant temperature and therefore not at the refrigerator door, to avoid oxidation and ensure that wine maintains its quality for a longer period of time.”
