O minister of Agriculture and Sea said today in the Assembly of the Republic that costs have increased for everyone, but that it is the farmer who is making the greatest effort and criticised the lack of moderation of some policies.
“ The costs have increased for everyone and it is no accident that we have increased support for the farmer [...]. It is the farmer who is making the biggest effort and I have no problem admitting that”, said the Minister of Agriculture, José Manuel Fernandes, in response to Members.
The governor, who spoke in Lisbon at a parliamentary hearing in the context of the assessment of the State Budget for 2027 (OE2027) said that PARCA – Platform for Monitoring Relations in the Chain Agrofood has recently met to discuss issues such as production costs, the price paid to the producer and the value of the food basket.
“ We always said that the farmer cannot be the loser in the value chain ", vincou.
The food basket composed of 63 essential goods, monitored by Deco Proteste, increased by 2,40 euros, compared to the previous week, to 253,55 euros.
The products that increased the most were Maria cookies (14%), whole grains (14%) and roasted coffee (12%).
Since the beginning of the year, there has been an increase of EUR 14,12 in the basket.
According to Deco, four years ago it was possible to buy the same essential basket for minus EUR 68.25.
The holder of the Agriculture folder acknowledged that the market may be better, but asked for moderation, remembering that, for example, in France there were no eggs because “it was impossible to have aviaries in the face of national and European legislation”.
Already on the questions raised about animal welfare, José Manuel Fernandes said not to follow the “Disney view of the rural world, where the boar is the Pumbaa accompanied by Timon”.
In October, the Ministry of Agriculture announced a pilot project for the control of wild boars in 15 districts, with €500,000 of global funding for hunting areas that reach “results higher than their historical average”.
This project covers more than 1,300 hunting areas, distributed by 65 municipalities of 15 districts of mainland Portugal.
The ministry under José Manuel Fernandes justified this measure with the growth of boar populations and their impact.
As detailed, the support is 50 euros per male and 70 per female for animals slaughtered above average.
Additional support of EUR 10 per animal sent to a game handling establishment is also provided to take advantage of the meat.
The limit is 2,000 euros per hunting zone.
