Jonas Attenius, also the local leader of Social Democrats, was at a local bar recording a campaign video, along with a collaborator, when a man stood up and ran towards him screaming, according to Swedish public radio.

“ He wanted to push us into the river and called me a traitor and a socialist pig, among other things. My colleague called the police while I was trying to calm the man down. Fortunately, no one was physically injured, but we were naturally shocked by the situation.”Jonas Attenius told Swedish public television SVT.

In Sweden there is no day of reflection, with the election campaign taking place until the eve of the voting day.

Police removed the suspect, a 55-year-old man, from the scene, having been reported for threat, SVT added.

The leader of the Social Democrats and former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson commented on the case, pointing the finger to the Swedish Democrats, party of the nationalist radical right, who accused of legitimizing the type of speech used by man.

To Swedish televisions, Andersson said that “there is a party that uses the word traitor to the homeland”. Swedish Democrats (nationalist radical right) replied that drawing this parallel is “simply stupid”.

Attenius wrote, however, on social media that he is well.

The Swedes go to the polls today, in a tight race led by the Social Democrats, but with an uncertain governance scenario.

The current right-wing coalition government, with the support of the radical right, is, together, very close to the voting intentions of the left-wing bloc.

The margin is so short that one of Sweden's largest private channels decided not to broadcast the usual poll before closing the polls.

According to polls made in recent weeks, the blocks are very close and the outcome is unpredictable, so the TV4 channel will only make projections after closing the polls at 20:00 (19:00 in Lisbon).

The vote has taken place quietly, but with long lines in various places.

In Umea, northern Sweden, a voter told Lusa that he had been waiting for about four hours.

The Swedish press has also reported long lines elsewhere, with voters waiting between one and two hours to vote.
