O co-founder and former Microsoft CEO, Bill Gates, committed to spending at least a billion dollars through its foundation – the Gates Foundation – to expand access to artificial intelligence tools.
Account to Reuters that this amount will be invested in partners working in the areas of education, health care and agriculture, with the aim of benefiting them with the benefits that may result from this technology.
Moreover, investment also serves to make the major language models at the base of these Artificial Intelligence tools work in all languages. The goal is to decentralize English Artificial Intelligence, with this language concerning about 49% of all content available on the Internet.
In addition to the announcement, Gates used to criticize the governments and entities that should already be working on Artificial Intelligence regulation and pointed out that they are too late in this process.
“I don’t think any government is as deep as it should be in this matter”, declared Gates. “Governments are very behind on this issue”.
Bill Gates proposes jobs for humans only
The tycoon, philanthropist, co-founder and former Microsoft leader, Bill Gates, shared in his personal site a “little” essay dedicated to the impacts of Artificial Intelligence on the world in which we live and introduces a proposal to safeguard the future of humanity as we know it.
Gates proposes in this text what is called Human Reserved Works – jobs that have the same value as a natural reserve, where development should be restricted for preservation. The areas in question are childcare and jury services, with Gates considering that 40% of jobs should be reserved for humans.
Even with this proposal, Microsoft's co-founder believes that companies should have a financial incentive not to replace human workers with artificial intelligence machines in these areas. Still, Gates is not especially optimistic about the impact of technology on society.
“ In terms of equity, Artificial Intelligence will be the greatest instrument of equality ever created or the worst source of injustice”, writes Gates. “The challenge is monumental. Even in the best circumstances, the transition to this new era of Artificial Intelligence will be one of the most turbulent periods in the history of mankind.”.
In addition to the risks to the labor market, Microsoft's former leader also believes that Artificial Intelligence poses more risks. Among them is the possibility of increasing crime.
“ Long before Artificial Intelligence became mainstream, there was online information on how to create weapons, bombs, biological weapons and even computer viruses.”, explains Gates. “ With Artificial Intelligence it will be much easier not only to access this information, but also to act. Even criminals with limited capabilities will be able to target victims at all scales: individuals, businesses and governments”.
