Oforeign investors withdrew a record volume of capital from the Taiwan Stock Exchange in October, at a time when the sale of artificial intelligence-related shares brings the main index of the island closer to a technical correction.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg news agency, foreign investors sold Taiwanese shares of USD 31,780 million (EUR 28,466 million) in October, surpassing the previous monthly record, recorded last March, of USD 28,720 million (EUR 25,723 million).
This capital outflow shows the growing instability in the world market linked to AI, in the context of increased financing costs, increased investment costs of large technology companies and financial results below expectations among major companies in the sector.
The Taiwanese market, strongly dependent on the technological sector, may suffer new falls this week, after the US Nasdaq index has retreated 2.86% on Friday and the Philadelphia semiconductor index has fallen 7.2% in the same session.
At 10:00 locals (02:00 in Lisbon), Taiwan's main stock exchange index, Taiex, dropped from 1.24% to 44,647.67 points, standing 10.39% below the historic maximum reached on October 6.
Taiwan, where the world's largest manufacturer of advanced semiconductors, TSMC, and the leading manufacturer of artificial intelligence servers, Foxconn, are based, has been one of the major beneficiaries of the AI expansion.
Despite recent falls, Taiex has accumulated a value of more than 50% since the beginning of the year.
