A the proposal focuses mainly on foie gras, the fatty liver of geese and ducks, and it will actually apply in 180 days.
The ban applies to both canned and canned goods.
According to the new law, published in today’s edition of the Official Gazette of the Union, “forced feeding refers to any method, mechanical or manual, consisting of forcing the intake of food or food supplements beyond the limit of natural satisfaction of the animal”.
The law cites, for example, the use of any type of “approach to pour food directly into the throat, esophagus, mouth or stomach of the animal”.
In an interview with Lusa, Congressman Fred Costa, author of the bill, pointed out that Brazil is the second country in the world to ban foie gras, India being the first.
“ May this law be an example to other countries, thus avoiding the pain of ducks and geese. For those who think this is normal, just put themselves in the place of these living beings who have feelings and feel pain ", declared.
“Imagine you being fed by a tube inserted through your mouth, and you are forced to eat five times as much food as you need daily,” he said.
“ So, making this analogy already demonstrates how much these animals suffered so that few had this delicacy ", concluded.
