U. serious fire at the Canadian military base of Wainwright, Alberta province, caused deaths and injuries, according to authorities, who have not yet needed the number of victims.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on social media that on Saturday there was a “serious incident” that caused a major fire in military facilities, located about two hours east of Edmonton.

“ Our thoughts are with all the brave men and women affected”, said Carney, who added to be in contact with Alberta's Prime Minister Danielle Smith.

Smith classified the fire as “serious and tragic” and said it affected numerous military personnel.

Conservative deputy Dane Lloyd said he received information on “numberless victims” following an explosion and a fire, although the authorities did not confirm the balance sheet.

According to Canadian public radio television CBC, strong winds favored the rapid spread of flames. Emergency services deployed medical and firefighting teams, while local authorities asked the population to avoid the area to facilitate rescue operations.

Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed that the Armed Forces informed him of the incident and acknowledged that there were casualties and injuries, although he did not specify the number.

The fire takes place two days from the 19 October referendum in Alberta, in which citizens decide whether the province should remain in Canada or initiate the legal process to carry out a binding future consultation on independence.
