O pS leader admitted today that the “deepest convictions” would lead to a vote against a “bad state budget”, but explained that he opted for abstention because the opposition is to the government and not to the country.

“ The reason for being fundamental to our National Commission has much to do with my proposal to abstain from the state budget proposal. I'm doing it for reasons of weight. I know that, at the bottom of each and every one of you, there are also weighty reasons for us to propose a vote against this State Budget,” said José Luís Carneiro in the initial intervention of the meeting of the PS body in Lisbon.

According to the Secretary-General of the PS, the “deepest convictions” of the PS would lead to the “idea of voting against” in the State Budget for 2027 (OE2027).

“ But we're not just any party. We oppose the government, but we do not oppose Portugal. It is a big difference in relation to others ", justified.

According to Carneiro, this is a “bad Budget” and Portugal “is bad”, warning that with “the bad choices of the government the country can get worse”.

Last week, and even before the government's proposal was known, José Luís Carneiro announced, in an interview with Eco newspaper, that he was going to propose to the party's organs that the socialists abstained and thus make the document possible, after the guarantees that had been left by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, on conditions laid down by the PS.
