PS Political Commission expressed “total consensus” on abstention in the OE

“ A National Political Commission does not have the culture of formally voting on this type of proposals from the Secretary-General, it is not a statutory obligation to do so and therefore the overall feeling that results from all the interventions is a total consensus on the sense of vote that the party will have in Parliament,” said the PS spokesman to journalists at the headquarters of the PS after this meeting.

According to André Moz Caldas, the National Political Commission of the PS showed “a great consensus on the position proposed by the PS Secretary-General, José Luís Carneiro, to convey to the Parliamentary Group the understanding of the organs that the Socialist Party’s sense of vote in the State Budget for 2027 should be an abstensive vote”, which will enable the document to be made possible.

“ The meaning of this vote obviously shows no agreement or approximation with the content of the State Budget, nor with the policy of the government currently in office. It is a commitment to the Portuguese and to the Portuguese, a commitment to the whole of the country, it is to political stability and the possibility of overcoming moments of great difficulty ", he stressed.

The head of the PS said that this abstention is “for generality”.

“Unless there is no surprise that modifies the problem data, we will keep abstaining in the overall final vote. But, of course, if there is an episode that is not anticipated today that may happen and that is merely a theoretical scenario, in principle there will be no changes,” he said.

André Moz Caldas refused to adject this abstention and proved certain that the Portuguese understand this decision of the party led by José Luís Carneiro.

“ None or very few Portuguese would understand being called to elections once again, in the middle or in the middle of a legislature. In fact, the corrosion of our political environment stems from the fact that the Portuguese were called three times in the interval of a normal legislature,” he said, insisting that “the country needs stability in a context of serious international uncertainty.”.

For the former governor, the executive “will only have to complain about himself if he is not able” to, over 2027, implement “public policies that respond to the problems of Portuguese and Portuguese”.

“ It would not be understandable, quite the contrary, that the PS, with regard to the vote it will have in a state budget, would write the blank check and resign from being a party to opposition until the end of the legislature. According to information advanced to Lusa by socialist sources, in the intervention at this meeting, the Secretary-General of the PS returned to the arguments he has used to justify the abstention that he proposed to the party and that allows the feasibility of the government proposal.

According to Carneiro, this will be a “vote for Portugal” and not by the OE2027, which again classified as a “bad budget”.

On October 10, the National Commission of the PS had already expressed its agreement with the feasibility, by abstention, of the next State Budget, then advanced the socialist president, Carlos César, who defended the “ sense of responsibility” in the current context of international crisis.

In the opening speech of this National Commission, José Luís Carneiro again proposed the possibility, through abstention, of the OE2027, despite admitting that the “deepest convictions” would lead to a vote against a “bad state budget”, but that the PS opposes the government and not the country.
