O film “Memórias do Cárcere”, by Sérgio Graciano, from a book of memories and stories of Camilo Castelo Branco passed in prison, is now debuted in more than 30 cinemas.
The film, produced by Leopard Filmes, is an adaptation of Camilo Castelo Branco's "Memórias do Cárcere", and one of the last projects to involve screenwriter Carlos Saboga, who died last March.
The producer describes the film as “a fascinating and vivid portrait” of Camilo Castelo Branco (1825-1890), when he was arrested with Ana Plácido, in Porto, because of a “celebrate adultery process that shook the Portuguese society of the nineteenth century”.
In the book, Camilo Castelo Branco not only recalls the conditions in which he was imprisoned in the old Porto Relation Chain – where he wrote the novel “Love of Perdition” – how he reports characters and crime stories of other inmates.
The cast includes Albano Jerónimo and Maria João Bastos in the main roles, as well as Paulo Pires, Afonso Pimentel, João Pedro Vaz, Marcello Urgeghe and Adriano Carvalho, among others.
According to Leopard Films, “Memories of the Prison” reaches more than 30 cinemas, days before being presented in competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival, which begins on the 26th.
The film premiered in France in March 2027.
“Memórias do Cárcere” is the second film by Sérgio Graciano to premiere this year in Portuguese cinemas, after “Playback”, dedicated to the musician Carlos Paião, who arrived in the rooms in August.
Sérgio Graciano has in the curriculum the realization of several television productions, such as the series “Tell me what it was like” and “Auga Seca”, the program “Last Coming Out” and the soap operas “Lassos de Blood” and “Prisioneira”.
In 2012 debuted the first fiction feature film, “So So”, which followed, among others, “A life waiting” (2016), “Lost” (2017), “Blood lines” (2018), “The sound descending on earth” (2021) and “Soares is cool” 2024.
With Leopardo Films Sérgio Graciano also made the film “The Roles of English” (2024), from a literary trilogy by Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, and prepares, according to this producer, the film “The Goodbyes”, in an adaptation of a work by Juan Carlos Onetti and that will be starring by producer Paulo Branco.
