According to Leonid Pasechnik, the governor of the region, close to Russia, the Ukrainian attack on the locality of Brianka hit a car, killing a 23-year-old girl and her mother, of 63, while another similar drone attack victimized a 35-year-old man.

An attack on the Krasnodon district caused several explosions, causing the death of a 14-year-old and wounding another 13-year-old, and a 29-year-old tractor driver died following the explosion of a mine in Lisichansk.

In recent weeks, the Ukrainian army has intensified attacks on the Lugansk region, annexed by Russia in 2022 and from which Moscow has been attempting to take the north of the Donetsk region under Kiev control since the beginning of the war.

The Russian military offensive against Ukrainian territory, launched on 24 February 2022, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939–1945).

On Friday, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed that his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would travel to Moscow and Kiev this weekend to seek to revive the talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the war.

Witkoff, the White House's special envoy, and Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, are meeting today with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and will later travel to Kiev to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the first meeting between the two negotiators and the Ukrainian leader.

The trip has been in negotiation for several weeks, according to American sources quoted by The New York Times, which detailed that Washington wants Ukraine and Russia to temporarily suspend their attacks while US envoys are in the region.

The trip takes place a year after Trump received Putin in Alaska in August 2025, in an attempt to end the war, one of the Republican campaign promises. The meeting, however, ended without agreement.

Trump is trying to reintegrate Russia on the international stage, having invited Moscow to attend the meetings of the G20 finance ministers held last week in North Carolina (United States).
