O Club Med wants to open two new ventures in Brazil by 2030, said today to Lusa Andrew Xu, co-chair president of the hotel chair that belongs to Fosun, a Chinese conglomerate that also owns several companies in Portugal.

Club Med currently has three projects in Brazil and Xu stressed that the chain “keeps confidence” in the country, which described it as “a key market”, with plans to “open two units in the next three or four years”.

The first project, in Gramado, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, will bet on mountain tourism in Serra Gaúcha, in partnership with “a local investor”, the executive revealed.

The unit has an opening planned for 2027, with 250 rooms and suites and 20 ‘villas’, in an area of about 200,000 square meters, part of a complex developed by Brazilian entrepreneur Dody Sirena.

Andrew Xu argued that Club Med has done “an excellent job in the internal market”, betting on business events and weddings, which already represent 20% of the turnover of the hotel chair in Brazil.

The second project will be betting on beach tourism in Fortaleza, northeastern Brazil, a region that, he recalled, “is well known for the practice of kitesurfing”.

The unit to be developed in Beberibe, on the coast of the state of Ceará, will open doors in 2029, with about 310 rooms, in an area of about 37,000 square meters.

Xu stressed that the capital of Ceará has direct flights “from Paris and other European capitals”, including links to Lisbon operated by TAP and LATAM Airlines Brasil.

“In the case of Fortaleza, we are undoubtedly also betting on capturing long-distance visitors from Europe. The destination will count on multiple sources of search ", said.

Both Brazil and neighbouring Argentina did not have a “very favorable history of exchange rate and inflation,” but both countries have become “many stable in economic terms” in recent years, said Xu.

The co-president of Club Med revealed that the hotel chair is “assessing the possibility” of opening a unit in Argentina.

“ We have some projects in view, but they are still in the study phase, nothing has yet been signed”, he added.

Xu spoke on the margins of the 12th Forum on the Economy of Global Tourism, which ended in the Chinese semi-autonomous region of Macao.

Club Med, which was founded in 1950 and is present in 32 countries around the world, is owned by China’s Chinese conglomerate Fosun, based in Shanghai, China’s economic “capital”.

Fosun has carried out a series of acquisitions across borders, acquiring in Portugal the insurer Fidelidade, a participation of almost 30% in the Millennium BCP bank and more than 5% of the REN – National Energy Networks.
