A North Korea rejected on Tuesday (local time) the FBI's charges of being the author of the $6.3 billion (5.6 billion) theft in cryptocurrencies, through the invasion of the Binance platform.
The sister of leader Kim Jong Un classified the allegations as a “serious political provocation”.
Kim Yo Jong stated, in a statement released by the state news agency KCNA, that the claims of the U.S. federal police (FBI) are nothing but a “absurd rhetoric that brings nothing new,” considering the previous American accusations that North Korea would have been responsible for the attack on ByBit in February 2025.
“ It is a serious political provocation against the DPRK that the United States deceives international public opinion, as if all cybercrimes committed in different parts of the world were our work,” Kim stressed, using the acronym “the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”, North Korea’s official name.
The FBI accused North Korea of being the author of the robbery. American investigators claim to have identified, behind this record theft, the group of North Korean hackers known by the name of TraderTraitor, and found that the criminals were converting the diverted funds into Ether, the cryptocurrence of the Ethereum network.
“ The expectation is that these assets are, in sequence, further washed through conversions via DeFi services and instant exchanges, in order to prepare them for other washing steps ", indicated the police force in a statement.
DeFi (decentralised finance) is financial services operating on blockchain. Instant exchanges allow you to quickly convert a cryptocurrency into another, without the need for a traditional bank or intermediary.
The FBI released a list of about 500 Ethereum addresses “that TraderTraitor agents are using to whiten these stolen assets” and requested cryptocurrency platforms, DeFi services and blockchain analysis companies to block transactions linked to these addresses.
Global leader in digital coin trading volume, Binance claims to have 335 million users. For comparison purposes, the Crypto website. with 741 million cryptocurrency owners worldwide.
