O Democratic Party surpassed the 250-seat mark in the U.S. House of Representatives in the mid-term elections held on Tuesday, according to projections of the major American media.
The data indicates a large majority, well above the 218 seats needed to control the lower chamber of Congress.
NBC station today designed that the Democrats finish counting 259 of the 435 seats of the House of Representatives against 176 of the Republicans.
ABC has now assigned 251 seats to the Democrats and 162 to the Republicans, yet to be defined 22.
CNN, in turn, points 251 seats for Democrats and 154 for Republicans, with 30 still open.
The result represents a strong defeat for Republicans, who lose the tight majority they had since the elections of 2024, when they won 220 seats against 215 of Democrats.
The new majority paves the way for Hakeem Jeffries, the current leader of the Democrats in the lower chamber, to become, in January, the first African-American to preside over the institution.
Democrats will also be able to use their majority to halt President Donald Trump's legislative agenda and boost investigations into the agent and his government.
The Senate (high chamber) will also be under democratic control after the party has won 54 out of 100 seats, against 44 of Republicans, after winning conservative bastions such as Texas, Kansas and Iowa.
The counting of votes continues in Alaska and Mississippi, where the Democrats have a narrow advantage.
Although Trump had asked his supporters to vote for him throughout the campaign, he demarcated from the Republican defeat, arguing that his name was not included in the ballots.
The polls, however, point to a vote of punishment for the Trump administration, due to the high cost of living, especially the price of gasoline, and the unpopular war in Iran.
Trump has already warned that he will veto the laws that are passed by the new Congress.
