21-year-old Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera was stabbed Saturday night in Cuautla, about 120 kilometres south of Mexico City. A student at the University of Granada in Spain was making an exchange at the University of Morelos in Cuernavaca.
“The suspect of this unfortunate crime is now in custody,” Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch announced on social network X.
A few hours later, the authorities of the State of Morelos (center) identified the suspect as Francisco Javier “N”, whose surname was not disclosed for legal reasons.
The State Prosecutor also indicated that he would request justice that the murder of the student be investigated as feminicide.
Morelos prosecutor Fernando Blumenkron stated at a press conference that the victim’s injuries allowed “to conclude that it is effectively a feminicide, taking into account the way it was committed”.
Blumenkron dismissed, however, the hypothesis of a crime of “sexual character” and indicated that the cabinet would request “the most severe penalty” for the aggressor.
On Tuesday, as the day before in Cuautla, dozens of young people manifested in this city, dressed in black as a sign of mourning.
Mexico is severely affected by violence against women. According to the UN, on average, ten women are murdered every day.
