This reduction focused on the public sector (public administrations and public enterprises), whose debt decreased by EUR 8.3 billion from June to EUR 386 billion, the central bank explained.
The decrease in public sector debt was due to the repayment of long-term government debt securities, in particular a Treasury bond (9.3 billion euros), the BP indicated, a reduction that was “partially compensated” by the increase in private individuals’ applications in savings and Treasury certificates.
On the other hand, private sector debt, which includes companies and private individuals, increased by EUR 2.4 billion to EUR 501.5 billion.
Private debt grew by 1.6 billion, mainly in the financial sector, with housing credit contributing EUR 1.2 billion to this increase.
In turn, the indebtedness of private companies rose by 0.8 billion.
As for the annual variation, the debt of individuals increased by 10% compared to July 2025, in which it was the most pronounced increase since the beginning of the series in December 2008.
On the other hand, the indebtedness of private companies increased 4.4%, more 0.7 percentage points than in June.
