Dand according to the publication of the Treasury – called “Climatic debt” – the total liabilities of the Federal Government of the United States reached 40,047 billion dollars.
The milestone was reached only five months after the amount exceeded 39 billion, showing that the pace of debt growth has recently accelerated.
This is mainly due to the fact that the Government of President Donald Trump stopped receiving the customs charges charged on imports from around the world, after the Supreme Court declared in February that they were illegal.
At the moment, the level of expenditure of its administration exceeds its tax revenue by about two billion dollars per year.
This is added to the great tax reduction law that Trump pushed last year and that promises to increase this annual deficit to more than four billion over the next decade.
In addition, federal spending has increased since the Republican's return to the White House in January 2025, while the debt-to-GDP ratio has also worsened.
Currently, the Federal Government is spending more than one billion dollars a year on interest payments, which are also increasing, to finance this debt, and that is already the second largest item of spending after the one for Social Security.
In this context, the profitability of the US 30-year debt title has again reached the highest level in 19 years this week, in the fear of an increase in inflation due to the war in Iran.
Today, the United States has announced that it will double the volume of its securities repurchase operations, up to at least $4,000 million, to “support the liquidity” of the long-term securities they issue.
