MXGPU is a Portuguese project that combines Moullinex (Luís Clara Gomes) and GPU Panic (Guilherme Tomé Ribeiro), a duo created in 2024 that crosses electronic music, audiovisual performance and a closer approach to the concept of hybrid spectacle.
“The invitation came at an incredible time for the project and, with about a year and a half of MXGPU we will be stepping on the stage of Tomorrowland”, said Guilherme Tomé Ribeiro (artificial name GPU Panic), in an interview with the agency Lusa.
Invited by the organization, the MXGPU consider that the presence today at Tomorrowland (on the Celestia stage) represents the recognition of the rapid projection achieved by the project.
“ We believe it is our music to break the path and to get further”, added GPU Panic.
The project was born from the creative relationship developed between the two artists, who previously collaborated, and seeks to hit the boundaries between live concert and DJ performance, a concept they intend to bring to Tomorrowland.
“ Let’s do a ‘hybrid set’, a dynamic mix of DJ set with live performance, and more than half of the material we’re going to play is our original and adjacent producers,” Luis Clara Gomes said.
Although not resorting to explicit references to traditional Portuguese music, artists argue that national identity is naturally present in their compositions.
“ Portugality ends up in the way we look at melody and harmony. It is part of our identity and enters the music in an unannounced way”, explained Moullinex.
And it came true: “Portuguese music has a strong influence on the music tradition of Andalusia, common to other regions of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. We don’t think about it when we compose, but it’s part of our identity and ends up naturally in music”.
In Tomorrowland, the duo promises to present mostly original themes and maintain close proximity to the audience that characterizes their shows.
“It’s a privilege. And we hope to see many Portuguese flags and we will be sad if there is no ", confessed Luís Clara Gomes.
Guilherme Tomé Ribeiro said: “It will be inspiring because for us it is also important as we present”.
The duo's musical identity is based on electronic dance music, with a strong audiovisual component, but incorporates melodic and vocal elements that they recognize as difficult to fit into a single genre, combining house, melody and even pop.
“ One of the reasons to go to the public was to feel that, as they gave us bigger stages, it was also greater the distance between our experience and that of the people who were listening to us,” he said.
After the premiere at Tomorrowland, the MXGPU intend to continue to consolidate the project internationally.
Moullinex is one of the Portuguese producers with the highest international recognition, with a career begun in the early 2000s, while GPU Panic is known for the cross between music, technology and visual arts.
The MXGPU project represents a new phase of Portuguese electronics, betting on an experience that combines concert, image and dance music.
In this, which is the 21st edition of the Tomorrowland festival in Belgium, the duo will reinforce the growing Portuguese presence throughout the different editions.
