Dat the end of the Irish Open, held in one of the complexes in Doonbeg (west of Ireland), Donald Trump said: “On behalf of the United States of America, I will eliminate the tariffs on Irish whiskey.”.
Donald Trump said that during the trip to Ireland everyone – including the country’s “taoiseach” (Prime Minister), Micheal Martin – insisted on this.
“ They tell me: 'Would you do me a favor? It's very unfair what's happening. Could you eliminate the tariffs on Irish whiskey? ‘,” Donald Trump commented.
The words of the American President were received with applause from those present in the golf tournament, among cries of “USA”, the abbreviation in English of the United States of America.
According to Irish public broadcaster RTÉ, Micheál Martin suggested the possibility of reducing the tariff on whisky during the Saturday meeting in Dublin, and Donald Trump promised to consider it.
Whisky produced in Ireland and sold in the United States is currently subject to a 10% tariff, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to whisky from the UK regions of Scotland and Northern Ireland, which are currently tax-free.
