Athe whole, Portugal has 17,000 foreign capital companies, of which 9,721 companies were created in the last decade, says Informa D&B, a company that compiles data from commercial companies, owned by the information network D&B Worldwide Network.
According to the study on foreign capital in the Portuguese market, this universe of entities, although corresponding to 3% of the business fabric, has “a much higher weight in the national economy, the result of its largest size and export profile”.
Companies “represent almost one third [31%] of the total turnover of the Portuguese business fabric, 22% of employment, 46% of exports and 15% of Gross Added Value (VAB) generated by companies,” says Informa D&B in a press release.
The 17 thousand companies employ 808 thousand employees, have a turnover of EUR 173 billion and account for EUR 52 billion in exports, with the associated GVA of EUR 44 billion, according to the study.
Spain is the country of origin of shareholders with the largest number of companies in Portugal (3,684), with a weight of 21%.
Spain and France are the countries that concentrate most employment and invoicing among foreign capital companies, worth 8.1% of employment and 11.2% of turnover.
Informa D&B estimates that 28% of foreign capital companies are exporters, compared with 8% among national capital companies.
“ Foreign capital companies also show a more technological and productive profile and have higher average wages, differences that result in part of their larger size and ability to generate wealth”, says the press release.
According to the productivity indicator of Informa D&B, “40% of foreign capital companies have a high or medium-high level of productivity, a level that is reached by 31% of national capital companies”.
With regard to wages, the analysis states that “foreign capital companies have an average of EUR 33,000 of staff expenditure per employee, an additional EUR 10,000 than national capital companies.”.
In this field, US capital companies “exist with an average of 50,000 euros of staff expenditure per employee”.
