Um a study conducted in the United States evaluated various types of footwear and revealed which is the most dangerous and responsible for a greater number of hospitalizations. The report presented this October gathers data between 2021 and 2025 from the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System.
What's the worst kind of shoes
The results indicate that slippers led to about 20,000 visits to the emergency room (20,750). This way they are considered the most dangerous footwear to walk since led to 23.3% hospitalizations. The boots are also responsible for an identical number of visits to the emergency room (20,840), but have a lower percentage of hospitalizations (7,9%).
In the case of slippers, 32% of cases led to plenty, with the head being the most affected part of the body. In the case of boots, 11.8% of cases are related to fractures and the foot was even the most fractured site in this case.

The state also showed other types of shoes such as finger slippers, sandals, high heels and sports shoes. In the ranking of visits to the emergency room, the third place is occupied by the finger slippers with 16,083 trips to the hospital. In this case, 11.3% of cases led to hospitalization, 26.8% of cases with some type of fracture and with the foot being the most affected area of the body.
Study: Falls and fractures due to footwear
The most serious cases were also examined and the slippers returned to be the worst type of footwear with 40.3% of serious injuries, 23.3% hospitalizations and 8,359 serious injuries per year. Here the finger slippers were in second position of the most dangerous type of footwear. They accounted for 30.9% of severe injuries, 26.8% with fracture, 11.3% hospitalizations and 4,965 severe injuries per year.
In this way, it does not mean that you should be free of the slippers you wear, but rather realize that the choice of shoes can lead to injuries that you might not be expecting, even inside the house.
The choice of non-slip shoes and shoes that fit better at your foot should be points to consider.
“Falls are the main cause of injuries in the elderly, aged 65 years and older, and may have serious consequences, such as reduced mobility and loss of independence. Day-to-day foot care and the use of suitable footwear can reduce the risk of falls,” U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns.
