O marine fuel business Clipper Oil, founded by Lusodescendant Kenny Alameda in San Diego, will record a significant increase in revenues in 2026 due to rising fuel prices, Lusa told Vice President Kevin Alameda.

“ Our volumes grew compared to last year and this is the goal every year, selling more fuel than the previous one”, said the executive, at the company's headquarters in Point Loma, where there is a large community of Portuguese origin.

“ Revenue will rise tremendously this year because the fuel price has doubled since the beginning of the war in Iran,” he explained.

The company, founded in 1985, is selling over 100 million gallons of fuel per year worldwide at 2,500 ports, including Lisbon.

“ We have a contract with the United States Navy and Coast Guard in Lisbon,” Kevin Alameda said. “When an American ship calls Lisbon in need of bunkers, Clipper Oil is the company that supplies them, which makes us proud because of the Portuguese heritage and the way this company was founded.”.

This line of business mirrors the expansion of a company whose origins were linked to the tuna fishing boats of the Portuguese community in San Diego, which today has about 20,000 people and is already little involved in the activity.

The expansion included opening one office in Singapore and another in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

“ We are always looking at continuous growth and diversification of the customer base,” Kevin Alameda said.

His father, Kenny Alameda, is a reference to the Portuguese-American and business community of San Diego, and was appointed in 2013 by the then American President, Barack Obama, as U.S. Commissioner on the Commission for the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.

His nickname, he said, became Alameda when his grandparents emigrated to the United States from the Azores and Continental Portugal. “The real name was ‘De Almeida’ and became Alameda”, said the Lusodescendant, who remains very close to the community.

“ Even today, some of my best friends are people I grew up with and went to school with, and I'm proud of it ", he said. “The Portuguese community of San Diego is very cohesive and self-help. I don’t think anyone has ever forgotten where it came from.”.
