“Hoje marks an important milestone in our search for the perpetrators of the murder of president Jovenel Moise. ... Five years after the events, we are still bringing suspects to U.S. justice and we have not finished yet”, wrote prosecutor Jason Redind Quinones on social network X.

According to the France-Presse Agency, among the suspects extradited to the United States is Joseph Félix Badio, a former Haitian leader of the anti-corruption unit, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice.

Haiti’s 53-year-old President-elect Jovenel Moise was shot at home in Port-au-Prince early in the morning from 6 to 7 July 2021.

At the time, the Haitian authorities detained about 40 people, including Colombian mercenaries, but the investigation did not develop due to flaws in the judicial system.

The United States has decided to prosecute 11 people, claiming that the plan has been filed in Florida. Five were sentenced to life imprisonment and four others were found guilty in a series of charges, including conspiracy.

Haiti, the poorest country on the American continent, has not held elections in nine years and has been without an elected President since the murder of Jovenel Moise.

It is currently governed by transitional authorities, who have had difficulty reaching an agreement on various matters, including the election calendar.
