A Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo, in power), announced today that it will support Daniel Chapo's presidential candidacy in the upcoming elections, scheduled for 2029, stressing that in two years as President of the Republic it stabilized the country.

“ It was for acclaim that the Central Committee took this decision and that comrade President will be our candidate for President of the Republic of Mozambique and will be our candidate for presidential elections,” Frelimo’s Secretary-General Shaquil Aboobacar said at a press conference in Maputo.

According to the politician, the decision was taken during an extraordinary meeting of the Central Committee held in Chimoio, Manica province, and must be formalized in the 13th Frelimo Congress, scheduled for July 2027, in Nampula, in the north of the country.

“In a specific way the Central Committee [...] decided that Comrade Daniel Francisco [Chapo], our President, would be candidate for the office of party president”, said Frelimo’s Secretary-General

Daniel Chapo took over the presidency of Frelimo in February 2025, succeeding Filipe Nyusi, and accumulating the positions of head of state and leader of the party, after the elections of 2024, marked by street protests and protests of election results.

For Shaquil Aboobacar, the Frelimo party’s decision to support Daniel Chapo’s candidacy has taken account of her performance since taking over the country’s leadership, in a context marked by the challenge to the results of the general elections of 2024, resulting in the creation of the Technical Commission for the National Inclusive Dialogue (Cote), which conducts political dialogue with a view to reforms.

“ There was still a feeling of distrust among Mozambicans, we felt in public institutions, in the public service an environment of non-conformism mainly because of the payment of overtime and shifts ", he said.

The Secretary-General also pointed out the problems associated with the implementation of the Single Salary Table (TSU) in the public service and highlighted Mozambique's exit from the grey list of the International Financial Action Group (GAFI) in 2025.

“The comrade President, in this short space of time, in less than two years was able to stabilize the country, initiate an inclusive national dialogue for the consolidation of peace and rescue national and international trust, allow foreign and national investment to re-trust the national market,” he said.

Daniel Chapo was a presidential candidate in the general election of 2024, which included the presidential elections, in which he won and took office on January 15, 2025, when protests and demonstrations were held by the then candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who never recognized the election results.

The contest triggered a wave of post-election protests for about five months, causing hundreds of deaths, as well as episodes of destruction and looting. Mondlane has since been the subject of criminal proceedings, with the trial already scheduled for November 17 at the Supreme Court (TS).

The criminal process was moved by the Public Prosecutor (MP) in the context of post-election demonstrations, with the politician accused of crimes of public apology to crime, incitement to collective disobedience, public instigation to the practice of crime, instigation to terrorism and incitement to terrorism.

According to the prosecution order of the MP, to which Lusa had access, the evidence against Venâncio Mondlane is largely based on appeals to contest, strikes, paralyses and mobilization for protests made through live broadcasts on social networks.
