O funeral of the 69 victims of the railway accident in Urda, Spain, will be held in Toledo Cathedral on 12 November, at 19:00 locals (18:00 in Lisbon), today announced the Archbishop of Toledo.

“All the Archdiocese of Toledo” will participate in the funeral to “pray for the victims and accompany the families, which are in our hearts,” said Archbishop Francisco Cerro Chaves at a press conference.

The funeral will be chaired by the Archbishop of Toledo and will be attended by the five bishops of Castile-La Mancha and the President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, Luis Javier Argüello.

The train accident in Urda (Toledo), where two high-speed trains collided a week ago, caused 69 deaths and 110 injured people.

The accident also resulted in the resignation of the Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Oscar Puente, and will lead to a reform of the railway system.

On Tuesday, the Spanish Government approved the creation of urgent support for victims worth EUR 30 million and a plan to improve the rail system in terms of technology, control and human resources.

The accident was the second with high-speed trains this year in the country, after, in January, a train had partially derailed in Adamuz, Córdoba, causing some carriages to invade the road in the opposite direction and causing 46 deaths and 292 injured.

Spain has the largest high-speed network in Europe and the second-largest in the world, after China, and now totals 54% of the deaths in accidents with these trains since the first circled in 1964 in Japan.

The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, today considered that the resignation of the Minister of Transport helps to regain confidence in Spanish high speed after the two accidents.
