A Iran Revolutionary Guard (GRI) claimed a new attack today on an oil tanker attempting to cross the Strait of Ormuz, the central stage of the war between Iran and the United States.
The claim was not confirmed by independent sources. The UK Maritime Safety Agency UKMTO today released information on four Sunday incidents involving ships hit in Ormuz.
In a statement published on its website, Sepah News, the GRI naval force states that “a supertanker was hit in the Strait of Ormuz and burned down.”.
In a statement, Iranian forces advance that the target ship of today’s attack tried to cross the area “disabling its navigation system” and “ignoring the warnings of the Guard Navy”.
Since the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East, triggered in late February by the attacks of the United States and Israel against Iran, Tehran claims control of the Strait of Ormuz, where one fifth of world hydrocarbons passed before the war.
Complaining the control of the international waterway, the Islamic Republic regularly attacks vessels attempting to cross-border without its authorization.
Washington imposes a naval blockade on Iranian ports and oil escorts, whose number of crossings through the strait has increased, raising hydrocarbons to levels close to before the conflict.
The United States claims to have nearly completely destroyed the capabilities of the Iranian Navy in the bombings triggered since February.
