Ua supertanker burned down today after colliding with a sea mine while trying to cross the Strait of Ormuz by an “unauthorized” route, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy revealed.
Without specifying the name, nor the flag of the vessel, the navy today revealed that a supertanker carrying crude was trying to get out of the Strait of Ormuz “by an unauthorized route when he suffered a heavy explosion, after colliding with a sea mine in a declared high-risk zone”.
The Revolutionary Guard Navy also revealed that the ship is still on fire, warning that “a fire of great proportions is the fate of any tanker offender who intends to ignore the safety and standards of the Ormuz Strait.”.
The announcement of the Iranian military force appeared hours after the United Arab Emirates National Guard informed on social network X of the rescue of the 22 crew members of an oil tanker set on fire in the Persian Gulf, without any connection being established between the two incidents.
According to the Emirates authorities, crew members of various Asian nationalities have been removed from the tanker, received first aid and are in stable condition.
The incident occurs after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard stated, on Friday, that it attacked in the Strait of Ormuz the NV Sunshine ship, which carried liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), by sailing a route considered “illegal”, causing a fire in the engine room and propulsion system.
The Revolutionary Guard has repeatedly assured that it keeps the Ormuz Strait under control, at a time when the oil flow in the region reached levels close to those recorded before the start of the war last February.
Iran closed the Ormuz strait after the start of the war by the United States and Israel and has used this maritime passage as one of its main forms of pressure in the conflict, while Washington responded with a naval blockade over Iranian ports and ships.
