“ A clean energy is no longer an alternative and has become a force that cannot be stopped,” he said, calling on countries to adopt concrete and firm plans to abandon fossil fuels.
When the world had just lived the hottest August ever, Guterres launched on Tuesday the cargo against the oil giants, accusing them of having long considered “the atmosphere as an open warehouse.”.
By launching a new appeal to action today, António Guterres wanted to send a message of hope.
“ Renewable energy is practically everywhere the cheapest, fastest and safest source to generate new electrical capacities,” he said.
He added: “clean energy has gone from the status of alternative to that of force that cannot be stopped.”.
Throughout his term of office, the UN Secretary-General attempted to mobilise the international community for climate emergency.
Today, António Guterres again urged states to raise their greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and to disclose concrete plans to abandon fossil fuels.
“ We are the first generation to have the necessary tools to put an end to the era of fossil fuels and the last one able to prevent a climate catastrophe”, insisted on the conclusion.
The appeal of the Secretary-General, who will end his term of office at the end of December, was reinforced by the adoption by Germany, the first European economic power, of a road map to this end a few hours earlier.
This is also the case after a summer when the effects of climate change have intensified around the world, between record heat waves, devastating fires, deadly floods and acceleration of glacier thaw.
