A cinnamon is one of the most used ingredients in cooking, however, its uses may extend even to plants.
In gardening, this spice began to gain popularity as a homemade trick to help protect the Sword of St. George from certain fungi and microorganisms, according to El Chronicle.
Cinnamon on the Sword of St. George. Why do gardeners recommend this?
The main reason cinnamon is used in gardening is because of its antifungal properties. Spice contains compounds such as cinnamaldehyde, which have the ability to inhibit the development of certain fungi.
Still, it is worth noting that the use of this ingredient is only a ‘supplement’, not constituting a treatment capable of eliminating an advanced infection by itself.
In the case of the Sword of São Jorge, cinnamon is mainly used to reduce the risk of fungi.
Cinnamon powder is usually applied locally to cut areas as a home-made alternative to reduce favorable conditions for the development of bacteria and fungi.
It can also be applied – very carefully – to the substrate, although the usual and recommended care for this species should never be replaced.
The Sword of Saint George, also known as Sansevieria or Dracaena trifasciata, is a particularly resistant species, capable of tolerating periods with little water. Having said that, one of the main mistakes to avoid is excessive watering.
How to apply cinnamon on a Sword of Saint George
If you want to use this method, one of the simplest options is to use pure cinnamon powder, no sugar or other added ingredients.
Apply a small amount on the cut, clean and dry area. The idea is to use a very thin bed, without completely covering the plant or saturating the substrate.
