“ Uthe merchant ship was hit around 05:00 (02:30 in Lisbon) this morning off the island of Hengam and the island of Qeshm. One person died and three others were injured”, said, without specifying the origin of this attack, the governor of the city of Qeshm, Amir Teymouri, quoted by state television and the agency Tasnim.

Several overnight explosions have been reported near Qeshm, which is the largest island in the Strait of Ormuz.

The Office of Commercial Maritime Operations of the United Kingdom (UKMTO) reported this morning that a ship crossing the Strait of Ormuz was hit by a projectile of unknown origin, without indicating whether the incident caused victims or material damage.

“UKMTO received a report on an incident in the Strait of Ormuz. An unknown projectile struck a ship as it crossed the strait”, indicated the organization in a statement released on social media, stating that it did not have information on the situation of crew members, the extent of possible damage to the ship or the possible environmental impact.

The incident takes place on the eve of a meeting between Iran and the Gulf countries dedicated to Ormuz, which will take place on Monday in Oman, a country also bordering the strait.

Control of the strategic maritime road to world trade is at the heart of the conflict between Tehran and Washington.

Iran, which was attacked on 28 February by the United States and Israel, blocked, in retaliation, the Strait of Ormuz, whose crossing was free and took place without obstacles before the war.

Iran now demands that ships obtain their permission to cross it, invoking security and sovereignty reasons, and is considering a mechanism for charging service fees.

Ships that do not comply with these rules are regularly attacked.

In retaliation, the United States imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and sporadically bombed the coast.
