Araghchi told Witkoff that Tehran’s conditions included “the immediate lifting of the (North American) naval blockade, the rapid release of all frozen Iranian assets, as well as the end of the war on all fronts,” IRIB reported.
Trump described earlier as “very good” the meeting held between American and Iranian representatives, shortly after threatening to “anniquilate” the Islamic Republic during its speech at the UN General Assembly.
Washington and Tehran agreed on 17 June a memorandum of understanding, with mediation from Middle East countries, which included an immediate ceasefire, the reopening of the Ormuz Strait to maritime traffic and the lifting of the naval blockade imposed by the United States to Iran's ports.
However, the parties returned to their naval blockades and did not continue the negotiations provided for in the Memorandum to reach a definitive peace agreement, the two-month deadline of which expired.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke today about the conflict in the Middle East with Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, King Abdullah II of Jordan and the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Guterres received all three during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, in which, due to his positions, they were among the first to speak.
According to a statement from the UN Secretary-General, Guterres and Abdullah II discussed the situation in Palestine and Lebanon.
Both agreed on the importance of “recovery and reconstruction” and on the need to promote a negotiated two-state solution.
Erdogan and Guterres also addressed the situation throughout the Middle East, apart from Cyprus and the war in Ukraine, another issue which should be central to this issue.
With the Emir of Qatar, Guterres reaffirmed the importance of respecting the rights and freedoms of navigation, especially in the Strait of Ormuz, blocked by Iran, and Bab el-Mandeb, threatened by the Houthis rebels of Yemen.
The Portuguese diplomat praised Qatar’s “long-term cooperation” with the UN and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to further advance in conflict prevention and mediation.
Qatar, Jordan and Turkey maintain a coordinated stance on tension between the United States and Iran and have on several occasions advocated a peaceful way out of the conflict through mediation.
Qatar has played an active role in mediation between Washington and Tehran.
Already the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, released on social network X that met with Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, in the margins of the UN General Assembly, where they addressed “the diplomatic prospects for ending the war between the US and Iran and fully reopening the Strait of Ormuz”.
“ There were no tolls or tolls before the war, and there should be none after the conflict. Navigation must be free and clear, both in the Strait of Ormuz and in the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb,” stressed the EU's chief of diplomacy.
Kallas also indicated that he raised Araghchi “the issue of internal repression in Iran, including the sharp increase in executions and death sentences”.
