Nthe Thursday, at 17 days of the general elections of october, Lula da Silva granted adjustment of 15% of Bolsa Família, the main income transfer program to the poorest, which caused great criticism of the market and opposition.
Lula da Silva's main opponent in the race to the Palácio do Planalto, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, even said that the measure was “act of despair”, since the PT appears behind him in some polls of intention to vote in the second round.
Since the Bolsa Família was relaunched in 2023, the program has not undergone adjustments and, according to the Brazilian Government, the measure aims to restore inflationary losses as provided by law.
However, sources of the circle of Flávio Bolsonaro, cited by the Brazilian press, said that the campaign of the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro will not trigger the Electoral Justice to avoid wear with the elector.
One of the reasons is that his father, on the eve of the elections in 2022, increased the value of the social program, at the time called Aid Brazil, 100 days from the elections, and was much criticized by the opposition of the time.
The decision of Friday of the Brazilian Supreme Court, granted by Judge Gilmar Mendes, met a request made hours earlier by the Attorney General of the Union (AGU), ministry that advocates and represents the interests of the federal government, which triggered the Court to recognize Lula's decree.
The party candidate Mission, Renan Santos, asked the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) to suspend the increase in the Bolsa Família to claim that Lula's measure is electorate.
The action, however, has not yet been analyzed by the Electoral Justice.
The adjustment, which comes into force in October, should benefit more than 19 million families, according to Lula's economic team.
The impact of the update on public coffers will be 5.8 billion reais (about €975.49 million) this year, and 22.7 billion reais (€3.81 billion) in 2027.
In addition to the President of Brazil, in a struggle that is coming to be Lula da Silva against Flávio Bolsonaro, Brazilians will elect, on October 4, 513 members of the House of Representatives and renew two thirds of the 81 Senate seats.
With the polls showing a fierce struggle between the current Brazilian President, Lula da Silva, and the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, if no candidate can reach at least 50% of the votes, the voters will be called back to the polls for a second round, scheduled for October 25.
