In an event focused on the maternal health of black women and the increase in health care costs, the Democratic candidate for the presidency in 2024 argued that “the Senate should act as a brake against the abuses of this government”, led by Donald Trump.

“ In my opinion, the person sitting on my right (El-Sayed) would be a [brake] if elected ", stressed.

El-Sayed, who if elected will be the first Muslim senator in the high chamber of Congress, insisted on the idea of fully recovering the “Medicaid”, public health insurance program aimed mainly at low-income people and families.

Candidate of the progressive left unaffiliated in the Democratic Party, El-Sayed disputes Michigan's seat in the Senate against Republican Mike Rogers, former member of the House of Representatives.

Recent surveys give El-Sayed a seven-point advantage over Rogers, who has the support of President Donald Trump.

Michigan, where Harris lost to Trump by just over 80,000 votes in 2024, is a key state for Democrats in their aspirations to regain the Senate.

In the mid-term elections on November 3, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, currently also controlled by Republicans, will be in dispute.

In the Senate, 33 seats will be held in regular elections and two in special elections – one to fill the remainder of the term of JD Vance, elected vice president, and another to Marco Rubio, who resigned to become Secretary of State.

In addition, 36 states will be elected governor, along with three American territories (Guam, Northern Marianas and American Virgin Islands).
