O lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam today assured that the authorities will act firmly on illegal arms after the seizure of explosives allegedly intended for the Islamists of Hezbollah.
The Lebanese authorities arrested two men last week who supposedly were linked to the Shia group Hezbollah and were transporting 500 kilograms of explosives to Beirut.
“ It is confirmed that a truck (...) was intercepted days ago in Dahr al-Baïdar”, on the road linking Damascus to Beirut, wrote the head of the government on social media adding that the vehicle carried several hundred kilos of high-powered explosive material, including C-4.
Today, the Prime Minister said that the Lebanese authorities will continue the investigation to determine the identity of all those involved in the “criminal operation” by adding that the Beirut Government will act with the necessary firmness in relation to all weapons that escape the control of the authorities.
Nawaf Salam stated he understood “the concern of the Lebanese,” especially as the C-4 explosive matreial, said, was used in several political assassinations in Lebanon.
Hezbollah (God's Party), an armed militia financed by Tehran, was accused of carrying out several murders in Lebanon.
An international court condemned members of the Shia militia for the murder of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in 2005 committed with a huge load of explosives.
The pro-Iran armed group, which dominated political life in Lebanon, was weakened by two wars fought against Israel since 2023.
The fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria also cut off the supply routes for arms from Iran.
Lebanon had approved a plan to disarm Hezbollah in 2025, after a first war started by the Shia group against Israel in support of Palestinian Hamas.
Hezbollah subsequently dragged Lebanon into a new conflict in March in support of Iran.
However, the Lebanese Army — in charge of implementing the disarmament plan and positioning itself in southern Lebanon as the Israeli Army withdraws — lacks personnel, equipment and technical capacity.
The European Union must launch a new training mission for the Lebanese Army, the head of European diplomacy reported last week during a visit to Beirut.
