O leader of the main opposition party in Poland admitted the possibility of leaving the country of the European Union, in case of absence of reforms, a position already denounced by the pro-European executive, led by Donald Tusk.
The party leader Law and Justice (PiS, nationalist and conservative), Jaroslaw Kaczynski demanded the abolition of the European Commission, “a very harmful body (which) should not exist”, as well as a new treaty between states.
The former Prime Minister (2006-2007) and currently Member of Parliament argued, in a forum on Wednesday, that if these requirements are not met, the current European Treaty “specifies the conditions for the departure of a country from the European Union”, raising the possibility of a ‘Polexit’.
“ It all starts with negotiations, and we really have to start them. It is a difficult and risky method, but the situation is so critical that it is worth resorting to if others fail ", he considered.
In power between 2015 and 2023, the PiS, which largely contributed to the election of nationalist Karol Nawrocki as President in June 2025, carried out reforms during that mandate which in Brussels are considered contrary to the rules of the rule of law.
The party believes that EU policy is dictated by its founding countries and, in particular, by Germany, of which it requires EUR 1,300 billion in reparations for Nazi crimes committed during World War II.
For Jaroslaw Kaczynski, political winds in Europe are turning in favour of his camp, with the possibility of a victory of Marine Le Pen (extreme right) in the French presidential elections of 2027 and also in view of the November elections in Spain, which could give the extreme right-wing party Vox an arbitrator role.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk today declared himself ready to wage a “fierce fight” against Poland’s exit from the EU.
“Jaroslaw Kaczynski has just announced that Poland must start negotiations on the conditions for leaving the European Union. It is for this reason, among others, that a fierce struggle is being fought in Poland today. A relentless fight. I don’t want to lose it,” he wrote on his X network account, Tusk, who was President of the European Council between 2014 and 2019.
Deputy Prime Minister and Head of Polish diplomacy, Radoslaw Sikorski, said the PiS wants “a customs border with Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Lithuania; identity checks at airports; the end of subsidies to farmers and investments”.
The Polish ruler also quoted the European Safe Fund to finance defence projects, on behalf of which Warsaw, a neighbour and supporter of Ukraine – which also borders Russia and Belarus – received EUR 43.7 billion.
The parliamentary majority regularly accuses the right of giving in to the extreme Europhobic right, which is rising in the polls, one year from the next parliamentary elections.
