O democratic leader in the House of Representatives, Hakeem Jeffries, today welcomed the surprising outcome in the mid-term elections and said that the party will not seek “to settle accounts” with the US President, but rather “to solve the problems” of citizens.

“ We were optimistic about the possibility of regaining control of the House” of the Representatives, or even of making progress in areas traditionally conquered by the US President Donald Trump, said Jeffries, in an interview with the MS NOW channel, considered the favorite to become the first African-American president of the lower House of Congress following this victory.

“ But 250, perhaps up to 255, is an impressive number,” he said, referring to some projections of places for Democrats.

The latest estimates from the US media give Democrats at least 228 elected, that is, a majority of ten, of the 435 elected to the House of Representatives, and the full results are not yet known.

Jeffries attributed these results to three factors: “the cost of living in all areas, health and war thoughtless and costly in Iran”, which contributed to a large extent to the explosion of prices.

He called on “the President, even before the convening of the new Congress [in January], to end the war in Iran”, in what he identified as “one of the strong messages that the Americans sent” in the interims.

The Democrat ensured that the Democratic “tsunami” will not, however, serve to “adjust accounts” with Trump.

“The American people do not want us to work out. He wants us to work to solve his problems, because life is too expensive”, he defended.

In this way, it reinforced that the Democrats campaigned around the “commitment to make life more accessible”.

“ We have won with this message and now our responsibility is to govern with priority an affordable cost of life”, he said.

As for possible inquiries that the House of Representatives may open against the Trump administration, Jeffries insisted that it is the responsibility of his party to “follow the facts, apply the law, be guided by the Constitution and accept the consequences, whatever they may be.”.

Thus, he stressed that part of the work of the representatives in the United States Congress is to ensure that “those who have committed irregularities account for their actions.”.

Jeffries is to become the new leader of the House of Representatives and the first African-American to occupy that position in the history of the United States Congress, as mentioned by Democratic Party opposition leader Nancy Pelosi herself, following a clear victory in the mid-term elections.

The “intermediate elections” represented a heavy blow for the Republican Party, after the Democrats achieved the most optimistic scenarios to gain control of the two United States Congress chambers and achieve historic victories in the race for governor in states such as Texas, Ohio or Georgia.

The new composition of Congress, which will take office in January, will allow Democrats to influence budgetary policy and the adoption of legislation, as well as strengthen the supervision of the Republican administration.
